The UK government has added 11 new nations to its official warning roster concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Only last month, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following multiple notable cases like the fatal death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even minimal doses of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic chemical often utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not meant for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the distillation process.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Government Advice for Travellers

Authorities official the minister emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of methanol toxicity.

"When you are having drinks abroad, stick to trusted places and avoid homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help right away."

The complete roster of nations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
