The severe weather forced the evacuation of approximately 350,000 residents, bringing torrential rain and destructive gusts, particularly between Guangdong's Wuchuan and Hainan's Wenchang. Ferry services were halted and flights cancelled at Haikou Meilan airport. Typhoon Statistics The typhoon, this year's 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 151km/h and poured over 50mm of rainfall in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. Urban areas of Nanning also received significant rain amounts. The storm triggered China's top-tier red alert, with disruptions in Zhanjiang, where businesses, transport links and roads were shut. In Hong Kong, numerous air services were affected and dozens called off. Forecast and Movement As the typhoon moves inland towards the provincial area in Vietnam, it is expected to diminish into a tropical depression with 89km/h winds but will continue to bring heavy rainfall. Vietnam's northern regions could experience significant rainfall on Monday, increasing the risk of flooding and mudslides. The system is expected to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further intense rain is likely. Other Storm Systems Meanwhile, Hurricane Priscilla developed off Mexico's Pacific coast on Saturday night, first as a tropical storm. It led to a weather alert for the southwestern areas from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita on the start of the week. In the early hours of the next day, the hurricane was about 305 miles from a Mexican cape with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It intensified into a hurricane in the night, when wind speeds reached at 75mph. Although unlikely to make landfall, the storm is expected to generate hazardous swells and rip currents as it moves north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is predicted on Monday, reaching a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with some areas at about 200mm. Other regions could face 50-100mm. In other parts, a cyclone named Shakhti has formed as the initial post-season cyclonic storm of the year in the a body of water, causing an warning from the India Meteorological Department for an Indian state. On Sunday, the cyclone was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph. Shakhti, which has moved in a southwestern direction and lost strength, is forecast to recurve eastward into the Arabian Sea.
