The Video Platform Provides Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the amount of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development coincides with a surge in content created by AI, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for inferior, factory-style content that is often absurd or surreal.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. Collectively, in excess of 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the service daily, making AI content a minor portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by accessing the content preference feature in the application and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the tool encompass news, style, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to tag “realistic” AI-generated content, and it bans harmful fake videos of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the service will from now on attach an “AI-made” tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an collaborative effort for identifying AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also establishing a $2m awareness program for specialists and institutions to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit charitable organizations dedicated to teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has defended its content review process, following debate over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official explained that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
