🔗 Share this article The Devastating Change Just One Year Has Made in America In late October 2024, the landscape was completely separate. Ahead of the US presidential election, reflective citizens could admit the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – however they still could identify it as America. A democracy. A land where legal governance held significance. A nation guided by a honorable and decent official, notwithstanding his older age and growing weakness. These days, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we live in. People alleged as unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into transport, at times blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting federal prosecutors hand over a massive sum of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has practically rid itself of routine media oversight as it spends possibly reaching nearly $1tn in public funds. Institutions, legal practices, journalism organizations are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are regarded as nobility. “The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, wrote this past summer. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it transpired in this country.” Each day begins to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it has happened. Nevertheless, we know that Trump was legitimately chosen. Even after his highly troubling first term and following the alerts that came with the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – even after the president personally declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat just on day one – sufficient voters elected him rather than the other candidate. Frightening as the present situation is, it's more frightening to realize that we are just nine months into this administration. What will three more years of this downfall find us? And suppose that timeframe turns into a more extended duration, since there is no one to restrain this president from deciding that another term is essential, possibly for national security reasons? Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are legislative votes the coming year that may bring a different political equilibrium, should Democrats retake the Senate or House of parliament. There are elected officials who are trying to apply some accountability, like representatives who are launching an investigation into the attempted cash appropriation from legal authorities. And a leadership election three years from now could initiate the path to recovery just as the previous vote placed us on this regrettable path. There are countless citizens marching in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests. A former official, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of America is rising”, just as it did following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout anti-war demonstrations or throughout the Nixon controversy. On those occasions, the listing ship eventually was righted. Reich says he knows the indicators of that revival and observes it occurring currently. As evidence, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they solely cover approved content. “The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive till specific greed turns extremely harmful, an specific act so contemptuous of the common good, some brutality so noisy, that it has no choice other than to stir.” It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct. In the meantime, the big questions remain: can America ever recover? Can it retrieve its position internationally and its commitment to the rule of law? Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended? My pessimistic brain indicates that the second option is accurate; that everything could be lost. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we have to attempt, by any means available. In my case, as a media critic, that involves pushing media professionals to live up, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it could mean working on congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to safeguard ballot privileges. Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The truth is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to attempt to persevere. What Offers Me Hope Now The contact I encounter in the classroom with new media professionals, who are both idealistic and grounded, {always
