‘He has come back from the dead’: The comedy legend spent eight days in a medically induced coma during the pandemic.

The famed comedian endured a “near fatal” cardiac event that resulted in him being put into an induced coma in 2021, per details from a new documentary project about the comedy star.

The film, titled I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the legend of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who emceed the Oscars on two occasions, was hospitalized for five full weeks in the medical facility.

“There was a problem, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we went to the ER. His heart gave out. During those years he was drinking, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they are unable to pump as much blood through the body with each beat.”

Doctors then placed him into a state of unconsciousness for over a week, before warning his child, his daughter: “His return is uncertain. We don’t know how aware he’ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“When he woke up, all he could do was use his voice,” she stated further. “He has practically come back from the dead.”

He himself has stated that he has dealt with cognitive issues since his medical ordeal, and in the project he fails to recall some of his past on-set and backstage controversies, including a fistfight with Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live green room.

He expressed he was “hurt” by his absence from the 50th anniversary special of SNL earlier this year, at which he was in the crowd but not on stage.

“Honestly, it was quite upsetting,” he said. “I haven't spoken about this until now. But I assumed that I would’ve been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine took the stage, I was puzzled as to why I wasn't. I wasn't invited. Why was I excluded?”

Now 82, Chase, nearly lost his life in 1980 when he was electrocuted on the set of Modern Problems, an incident which triggered a period of severe depression.
