ð Share this article Challenges Persist for Humanitarian Assistance in Gaza's Urban Center Despite Ceasefire Even if the border entry point at the Egyptian border opens this week, aid groups face major difficulties providing aid to the northern region, the territory most severely affected by hunger, according to experts. Transportation Problems Key roads are almost unusable due to extensive devastation across the devastated territory â or continue to be under the control of Israeli forces. Any transport that breaks down is probably will be instantly looted. The main entry point, the key gateway to the north, damaged by two years of conflict, has been closed for multiple weeks, and Israeli officials have informed humanitarian organizations in Gaza that there are no immediate plans to activate the crossing, as stated by aid workers. Damage in Gaza City The northern urban center was the target of a major Israeli offensive launched in August that was still under way when the temporary truce was agreed upon last week. Destruction in the northern region has been extensive, with complete communities including urban centers and neighboring towns in destroyed as well as many of the surrounding regions of the main city. "Any operation of a border point into Gaza is positive, but we need to guarantee we can help civilians where they are," stated a senior director from a relief agency. Aid Situation Witnesses said many of the approximately 300,000 people who have returned to the northern region from the crowded shelter regions where they had been living during the Israeli offensive were now "camping" among the destruction of their homes, often without any protection and with scarce nutrition or hydration. A spokesperson from a humanitarian body said the devastation in Gaza City was "shocking". "We see block after block, building after building ... there is massive desperation for water. Conditions are severe. We need every border point open," the representative, who was in the northern city recently, stated. Insufficient Access A local director located in Gaza City said the needs in what used to be the region's thriving business and community focal point were "overwhelming". "We see positive expectation and hope but there needs to be quick improvement on the border points. We haven't seen any significant change on the situation yet," the director stated. "We are still getting a small quantity of assistance [and] we are only starting to comprehend the level of damage. So many streets are just full of ruins ... there is almost no home that is undamaged. We see destruction and unexploded bombs throughout the area." Ongoing Changes Recently, humanitarian organizations said small quantities of necessary propane came into Gaza for the first instance in multiple months, along with shipments of grain products, cereal and fresh vegetables. The new supplies sent market costs decreasing. In the central town, a local resident said there had been noticeable change since the peace agreement. "Stores are full of food, produce, and fresh fruit, although the prices are continuing to be expensive and not affordable for all people," the resident said. Cold Season Requirements "The primary requirements now, especially with the approach of the cold season, are to have a shelter to shelter us from the cold weather and winter clothes because the markets do not have enough clothes for us or, if they are available, they are scarce and extremely pricey." Several organization-assisted bakeries in various locations have begun working again since the ceasefire. Assistance Transport Trucks were reported to have passed via the humanitarian corridor from Israel to Gaza during the week, though exact numbers were uncertain. The nation's media outlet reported that Wednesday's humanitarian shipments would include edible goods, medical supplies, energy sources, cooking gas and equipment to repair vital infrastructure. "Humanitarian aid keeps coming into the conflict region through the Kerem Shalom crossing and alternative access points after Israeli security inspection," an government spokesperson said. Allocation Challenges But counting the number of trucks could be inaccurate, cautioned a professional from an international NGO. "We need to know what is in the vehicles and their capacity levels for it to be a really meaningful indicator," the official stated. Private companies are transporting convoys of vehicles carrying sweets, soft drinks and treats, which have little nutritional value, while emergency treatments for children or others who have been without adequate food for an extended period are limited. Treatment Conditions In Gaza City, only a handful of medical centers are operating, compared with many in earlier this year. Various groups have substantial resources of humanitarian goods stockpiled near the territory waiting to go in. A UN agency working with local residents across the area for decades has three months' worth of sustenance for everyone in Gaza in place to be delivered. "We have the materials, the instruments and the expertise ... we just need the entry," said one aid worker, just returning from Gaza. Diplomatic Aspects A diplomatic framework specifies that "complete" aid should reach Gaza and be allocated through humanitarian bodies and relief organizations, without interference from both military groups or national security. This likely prohibits the controversial authority-approved aid group which began operations in earlier this year, leading to disorderly situations and hundreds of deaths as crowds of aid-seekers gathered around its distribution sites.
