Blunders Made by Global Heads of State When They Think No One Is Listening

Recently, Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto thought he was having a private conversation with US President Donald Trump at the Gaza peace summit in Egypt.

However, a hot-mic incident captured Prabowo requesting Trump to organize a meeting with his son Eric, who serve as executives at the family business.

This was just one in a string of gaffes made by international figures thinking they're off the record.

Here are five other memorable blunders:

Organ Transplants and Everlasting Life

During a defense ceremony in Beijing this September, China's leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were overheard talking about organ replacement as a method for extending lifespan.

"Human organs can be repeatedly transplanted. The more you extend your life, the younger you become, and it's possible to even achieve immortality," Putin's interpreter was heard saying.

Xi, who was off camera, responded in Chinese: "Some predict that in the current era humans may reach 150 years old."

'Sea Rising at Your Door'

Ex-Australia immigration minister Peter Dutton faced criticism in 2015 when he made light about the plight of people in the Pacific facing ocean encroachment.

Dutton was speaking to former PM Tony Abbott, who had just returned from climate change talks with Pacific Island leaders in Port Moresby.

Observing how a migration discussion was running on "delayed schedule", Abbott responded: "We had a similar situation up in Port Moresby."

Dutton added: "Schedules become irrelevant when you're about to have water lapping at your door."

The comments provoked anger from regional nations and climate activists, while the political opponents called for Dutton to apologise.

'Prejudiced Voter'

As Labour prime minister Gordon Brown was on the trail in 2010, he faced a voter who challenged him on immigration and the economic situation.

Remaining connected to a broadcast microphone when he got into his vehicle, Brown was recorded stating: "That went terribly – they should never have put me with that woman. Whose idea was that? Absurd."

Asked what she had said, he answered: "All topics, she was just a bigoted woman."

This incident dominated headlines for weeks and Brown went on to lose the election.

'I Cannot Bear Netanyahu. He's a Liar.'

Former US president Barack Obama was in discussion at the international conference in Cannes in 2011 with then French president Nicolas Sarkozy when their comments about Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu were captured by a active recording device.

Sarkozy stated: "I cannot bear Netanyahu. He deceives."

Per a account from a translator quoted by Reuters, Obama replied: "You're fed up with him but I must work with him frequently than you."

'Major League ***hole'

A vintage recording incident from former White House hopeful George W. Bush occurred when he made a negative comment about a reporter from The New York Times.

The GOP candidate was unaware that a recording device was active when he leaned over to Dick Cheney at a Labor Day rally and said, "There's Adam Clymer, major league asshole from the New York Times."

Cheney responded: "Oh yeah, that's true, big time."
