Big 12 Chief Labels Notre Dame Comments After CFP Snub as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a strong statement, Brett Yormark asserted that Notre Dame's AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for public comments targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Dispute

Notre Dame maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. Bevacqua has contended that the ACC actively damaged Notre Dame’s bid to enter the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to pushing for the spot of the University of Miami.

“They does great things for Notre Dame, but we provide substantial football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this procedure,” the athletic director said.

Miami ultimately earned the CFP berth over Notre Dame, primarily due to securing the head-to-head matchup between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD also claimed that the ACC conducted a coordinated social media push over multiple weeks indicating its support for Miami.

A Strong Response

Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“My opinion is that his behavior has been out of line,” the commissioner commented. “He is totally out of bounds in his tactics and if he was in the room, I’d say to him the same thing.”

The pushback is especially significant given Bevacqua’s prominent position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the interests of football independent Notre Dame.

Historical Support and Speculative Rumors

Yormark also pointed out the support the ACC provided Notre Dame during the Covid-affected 2020 season, giving the Irish a complete ACC schedule and a place in its championship game.

“His behavior has been unacceptable,” Yormark said again. “It’s been egregious criticizing the ACC commissioner, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had spread about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's public comments on Tuesday seem to make such a scenario less likely in the near term.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP final last season, have announced they plan to decline a postseason invitation after failing to qualify this season.
