Apex Legends' Niche Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers has an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale players, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick movement can rejoice to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a surge of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, this technique was previously existed of the game for quite a while, often called as "ledge boosting." However it's no easy feat for the average player, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, the team is making it easier for everyone to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique existed in the game for some time, but the movement isn't easy to perform and a player might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer explains. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify when and how to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, making accessible the feature and introducing fresh strategies to play for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

Why make a previously obscure movement quirk accessible to everyone? Principal designer the development lead says the team aims for gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, observed what our players are doing, and we wondered, 'What if we extend some of this power to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Because currently, certain techniques are kind of janky to use — it requires to change controls and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'What if we make a polished implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is primarily the central theme in this season, with characters Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie all getting buffs to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and this skill will boost users upward much quicker than before. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and capability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. But it's aerial Valkyrie receiving significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states Legend designer the designer. "There's no doubt she was dominant in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and sort of bring her back to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore her competitive status in the game's meta, the developer notes the team evaluated all her skills and implemented some powerful modifications. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, increasing her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves regenerates much quicker, enabling her to spend more time in the air. Now she won't take damage from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to tag opponents who take damage from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches her entire squad into the air for redeployment or escape — requires much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains some new Legend Upgrades that players can select to conserve resources, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Map Changes

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn says the game Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the tools required to compete in matches.

"Essentially, we examined the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says lead Legend designer Josh Mohan.
