2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this trend, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the trend in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
